MENORCA, THE EFFORTLESS BEAUTY OF THE BALEARICS.

THE YACHTING HOTSPOTS OF THE WORLD

Even though the flexibility of the yachting life has a strong appeal and tempts you to never stay in one place for long, there are still popular hotspots around the world that yachties love to return to. We will keep introducing you to some of these yachting hotspots and inform you about the most beautiful bays, the best restaurants and other exclusive tips.

Menorca

Far from the hustle and bustle of Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca enchants with its Balearic authenticity, unspoilt nature and informal island vibe. Over the years, the northernmost island of the Balearic Islands has become an insider’s tip for yachties who are looking for peace and seclusion on their holiday, but don’t want to miss out on lifestyle. In addition to secluded bays, turquoise waters and a diverse coastal landscape, Menorca offers lively marinas with an extensive yacht service, traditional as well as exotic cuisine and exclusive fincas for a stay on land. We present our tips for an unforgettable island experience:

1. Ports on Menorca

Situated in the largest natural harbour of the Mediterranean, the Marina Port Mahón offers a special setting. Just entering via a so-called ria, a narrow bay that penetrates deep into the island, proves to be a multifaceted feast for the eyes. Picturesque cliffs stretch along the coast, lined by small villages such as the charming Es Castell or the imposing fortress of La Mola. Again and again, arrivals encounter smaller islands with historic buildings that bear witness to the legacy of British rule, before the capital and its marina reveal themselves in the shelter of the bay.

Yachts up to 50m in length can berth on site and make use of the professional services and modern facilities of the port management: Piers, which can only be entered with the help of a code, provide a high level of security and privacy. Changing rooms, showers and wifi internet are also provided. In addition, a harbour promenade lined with restaurants and bars awaits visitors, inviting them to take a walk, have a meal or wander through small boutiques, especially in the evening.

In addition to a stay in the Marina Port Mahón, it is also worth mooring in the Port de Ciutadella in the west of the island. Only geared to boats that do not exceed a length of 15m, the marina captivates with its idyllic character. Small restaurants adorn the promenade; the historic old town with its magnificent cathedral is only a short walk away.

2. Bays in menorca

True places of desire are Cala Macarella and the neighbouring Cala Macarelleta in the southwest of the island. Enclosed by high cliffs, the bays enchant with their turquoise water and fine sandy beaches. Especially when the wind blows from the north or west, you are well protected by the cliffs here and can enjoy the day on the water. If, on the other hand, the wind comes from the south, anchoring around the Punta des Macs is recommended. The south-western tip of the small island of Illa d’en Colom, which is off the east coast of Menorca, comes close to a small paradise. The unspoilt nature is characterised by rugged rocks, green hills and sandy beaches; numerous seabirds find a safe place to nest on land.

In the spirit of a popular, yet far from overcrowded anchorage spot, this is a great place to spend some time. And a little entertainment is also provided: Carlos (better known as “Mojito Man“) occasionally sails by with his little boat and prepares fantastic drinks for you on board if you wish!

3. Must-sees in Menorca

If you set foot on land, an evening in Binibeca Vell is worthwhile. All in white, the small town blends picturesquely into the southern coastal landscape of the island.

The magical atmosphere that surrounds this place becomes particularly clear during a walk at sunset: let yourself drift through the winding alleys towards the traditional Menorcan fishing harbour and be enchanted by the special glow of the houses in the evening sun.

Those who want to experience the rugged side of Menorca should take a trip to Cap de Favàritx in the north-east of the island. One of the oldest lighthouses on the island stands amidst deep black slate rocks. The roaring waves that meet the rugged coast here impressively demonstrate the natural force of the water and draw a stark contrast to the south of the island. As part of the S’Albufera des Grau nature reserve with fascinating flora and fauna, the area is also ideal for hiking.

If you are in the mood for a little more culture, you should not miss the recently opened, latest branch of the world-famous Hauser & Wirth gallery. The location alone is spectacular: situated on the Illa del Rei, which can only be reached by a short trip through Port Mahón with your own tender or the harbour ferry, the gallery moved into the British military hospital built there in the 18th century, which was revived and converted in the course of extensive restoration work. In addition to temporary exhibitions, which currently present the American painter Mark Bradford, there is also a carefully curated gallery shop on the premises with selected products from the local art scene and art books. The redevelopment is completed by the Cantina restaurant. Take a seat under the pine trees and enjoy an evening in an informal atmosphere, with exquisite wines and outstanding dishes. Special tip: for dessert, take a scoop of the homemade creamy chocolate ice cream!

4. Restaurants in Menorca

But the Cantina on the Illa del Rei is by no means the only place on Menorca that makes gourmet hearts beat faster! The island also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine. A visit to Es Moli de Foc, Sant Clement is an absolute insider tip among Menorcans. Rather inconspicuous from the outside, the restaurant’s façade conceals a fantastically overgrown inner courtyard where the finest delicacies of local cuisine are served. Our recommendation: foie gras on fruity bread with chopped tomatoes and cinnamon or gratinated mejilones with bourguignon sauce! For wine connoisseurs, an evening at Binifadet – a family-run winery with restaurant in the midst of the vines – is worthwhile. Explore the estate on a guided tour, learn more about the production and take part in a tasting of the in-house wines.

5. Hotels in Menorca

Those who want to spend a night on land can retreat to Torralbenc a little further inland. As part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this finca in traditional Menorcan style surrounded by pastures and vines offers its guests a dreamlike stay. Relax by the saltwater pool overlooking the sea or go on a Far East discovery tour in the hotel’s Michelin-awarded restaurant. The Santa Ponsa Fontenille Menorca in Alaior is also a first-class address. Situated on a 300-hectare estate, there’s plenty to discover: explore the aromatic garden with all your senses or take a walk to the limestone quarry. Recharge your batteries with a yoga session on the cliffs or indulge in the versatile spa treatments.
